Nick Broste Trio
Nick Broste Trio
The Nick Broste trio (featuring Keefe Jackson and Anton Hatwich) is a drummerless trio from Chicago that plays the compositions of Nick Broste. Since 2008 the trio has been honing a sound that is influenced by chamber music, west coast jazz of the 50's, and ambient and minimalist musics all filtered through an emphasis on free and jazz improvisation.

Nick Broste (trombonist, composer, recording engineer) has been an active player in the Chicago music scene since 1997. His current work centers around the Nick Broste trio, jazz sextet Herculaneum, space rock band Magical Beautiful, Mucca Pazza (a 30 piece punk rock marching band), as well as other ad hoc projects around the city. He has performed with James Falzone, Fred Lonberg-Holm, Jason Ajemian, Jeb Bishop, Keefe Jackson, Anton Hatwich, Marc Unternahrer, Mars Williams, Jim Baker, Josh Berman, Dave Rempis, Marc Riordan, Jamie Branch, Matt Bauder, and many others, as well as bands such as Wilco, Spoon, TV on the Radio, Cursive and Broken Social Scene.

Bassist Anton Hatwich has lived and worked in Chicago since 2003. He performs regularly in the city, and also tours with various groups both nationally and internationally. His list of collaborators includes: Keefe Jackson, Frank Rosaly, Nick Mazzarella, Paul Giallorenzo, Nick Broste, Fred Lonberg-Holm, Mars Williams, Toby Summerfield, Josh Berman, Jeb Bishop, Cameron Pfiffner, Tomeka Reid, Kyle Bruckmann, Tim Daisy, and Jason Adasciewicz, to name a few. Current projects and working bands include Anton Hatwich Trio, Anton Hatwich's 333, The Fast Citizens, Nick Mazzarella Trio, Aram Shelton Quartet, Nick Broste Trio, Toby Summerfield Trio, Kyle Bruckmann’s Wrack, Frank Rosaly's Green and Gold, and Paul Giallorenzo’s Get In to Go Out.

Keefe Jackson (saxophone, clarinets, composer) arrived in Chicago in 2001 from his native Fayetteville, Arkansas. He performs regularly with many musicians including Tim Daisy, Dave Rempis, Jeb Bishop, Jason Roebke, Guillermo Gregorio, Jason Adasiewicz, Mike Reed, Jason Stein, Josh Berman, Aram Shelton, Fred Lonberg-Holm, Frank Rosaly, and Marc Unternaehrer. He
has also played with Michael Moore, Ab Baars, Michiel Braam, and Anthony Coleman. His recordings are available on the Delmark and Clean Feed labels.
The SOUND OF THE CITY WORKSHOP gives the traditional jam session a modern twist. In place of the traditional house band, each week a new small ensemble will be featured performing original music. The evening focuses on creative improvisation as a way to approach and achieve original composition.

Following the featured ensemble’s set, the workshop opens things up to a larger pool of musicians, inviting improvisational performance from creative practitioners working within the spectrum of jazz and improvised music.

All improvisers - instrumentalists and vocalists - are welcome. The workshop is open to experienced musicians, as well as those excited to explore improvisation for the first time.

Musicians who’d like to be included need to arrive by 9:30pm. The workshop stresses that musicians come to listen first before taking part in playing. The whole evening is FREE and open to the public.
