American Contemporary Music Ensemble (ACME)
The American Contemporary Music Ensemble (ACME), celebrating its tenth season in 2014-2015, is dedicated to the outstanding performance of masterworks from the 20th and 21st centuries, primarily the work of American composers. ACME’s dedication to new music extends across genres, and has earned them a reputation among both classical and rock crowds. NPR calls them “contemporary new music dynamos,” and The New York Times describes ACME’s performances as “vital,” “brilliant,” and “electrifying.”

ACME brings the imaginative, carefully crafted, and rarely performed music of JOSEPH BYRD to the Constellation, written over the three years Byrd spent in New York from 1960 to 1963. During this short but prolific time he studied under Morton Feldman, apprenticed under John Cage, was secretary to Virgil Thomson, and had concerts at both Yoko Ono’s Greenwich Village loft and the Recital Hall at Carnegie. He later founded the psychedelic rock band The United States of America and its successor Joe Byrd and the Field Hippies. ACME's 2013 New World Records album of Byrd's music was described by The New York Times as a "vital new CD" performed with "verve and commitment," and by The Chicago Reader as "a stunning album." Byrd's music will be paired with two trios written by avant-metal guitarist MICK BARR. Consequence of Sound described ACME's performance of Barr's ACMED trio, writing, " It was a damn good piece of music . . . Barr arranges his music into juxtaposed blocks of sound, each stuck in its own melodic and harmonic vortex like some kind of death metal Stravinsky. Yet the ACME players brought out the formal cohesion and line that connected each section, occasionally lapsing into languid tones before restarting the rhythmic juggernaut."
