Multi-instrumentalist Mwata Bowden and bassist Paul Steinbeck have been performing together since 2001. Their ensemble Low End Theory, which they debuted in 2007 at the Velvet Lounge, is a showcase for Bowden and Steinbeck’s small-group compositions. In recent years, the ensemble’s repertoire has expanded to include pieces by Muhal Richard Abrams, Roscoe Mitchell, and other founding members of the AACM, the leading African American musicians’ collective of the past sixty years. For both Bowden and Steinbeck, the AACM is a touchstone and continued inspiration. Bowden joined the organization in 1974, served as the AACM’s chairman, and conducted the AACM Great Black Music Ensemble. Steinbeck studied music with a number of AACM artists and is also a leading scholar of the organization, known for his books Message to Our Folks, a history of the Art Ensemble of Chicago, and Exercises for the Creative Musician, co-authored with Fred Anderson. Bowden and Steinbeck’s collaborators in Low End Theory have included Harrison Bankhead, Thurman Barker, Khari Lemuel, and Dushun Mosley. At Constellation, they will be joined by the Chicago-born, Amsterdam-based trombonist T. S. Galloway and the Chicago drummer Marcus Evans.
