International Contemporary Ensemble Plays Morgan Krauss

Throughout "the other is contained in the one," Morgan Krauss expresses what it means to her to be a survivor of sexual abuse and sexual assault. The work is a multi-movement piece, approximately 45 minutes in length, scored for an unconducted chamber ensemble of six players: flute, voice, clarinet, bassoon, saxophone, and viola. The work will be semi-staged with fixed choreography designed collaboratively, and will utilize text from experimental filmmaker Richard Kern’s 1985 work “The Right Side Of My Brain.”

As in Kern’s work, which is known for its self-referential approaches to depicting the artist’s relationship to his subject, Krauss’ composition uses similar approaches to challenge the ways musicians relate physically to their instruments. Krauss explores the manipulation of musicians’ physical gestures until they feel trapped by their own instruments—or until their instruments begin to counteract themselves and choke their own sounds.

The International Contemporary Ensemble is an artist collective that is transforming the way music is created and experienced. As performer, curator, and educator, the Ensemble explores how new music intersects with communities across the world. The Ensemble’s 35 members are featured as soloists, chamber musicians, commissioners, and collaborators with the foremost musical artists of our time.

A recipient of the American Music Center’s Trailblazer Award and the Chamber Music America/ASCAP Award for Adventurous Programming, ICE was also named the 2014 Musical America Ensemble of the Year. The group currently serves as artists in residence at Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts’ Mostly Mozart Festival, and previously led a five-year residency at the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago.
