Chicago Jazz String Summit 2018
Chicago Jazz String Summit (CJSS) is a three-day music festival showcasing jazz, classical & experimental music by internationally celebrated musicians. Founded by critically acclaimed cellist and composer, Tomeka Reid, this year’s multi-venue event is open to public and will take place at Constellation May 4-5, 2018, and the Hungry Brain May 6. The Chicago Jazz String Summit aims to bring recognition to contemporary string music and to foster a creative platform for talented improvising string musicians to convene and to experiment.
Shana Tucker
Shana Tucker
To close Saturday evening, vocalist and cellist Shana Tucker will present a set of her original compositions. Touted by JazzTimes Magazine as “a jazz talent…whose imprint and vitality has already been quite visible in North Carolina,” Shana’s style and sound has been described as s mash-up of Dianne Reeves, Joni Mitchell and Tracy Chapman with an efficient complexity that is reminiscent of Bill Withers.
Daniel Levin
Daniel Levin
Described by the Wire as, “One of the instrument's most brilliant contemporary practitioners,” and “very much the man to watch” Penguin Guide to Jazz, cellist Daniel Levin will present a solo set at this year’s CJSS. No matter what the setting Levin occupies a musical space bordered by many kinds of music, but fully defined by none of them. Elements of European classical music, American jazz, microtonal and new music, and European free improvisation all figure prominently in his unique sound. As critic John Sharpe observes in The New York City Jazz Record, “he invokes all manner of musics with prodigious skill: jazz, classical, improv, noise, vocal chorus. His technique is unquestioned and he revels in the physicality of the instrument. Those with an adventurous streak or interest in the outer reaches of the cello universe will find much to savor.”
Shanta Nurullah’s Sistarsys
Shanta Nurullah’s Sistarsys
Multi-instrumentalist, storyteller and educator, Shanta Nurullah will perform on sitar at this year’s String Summit. She will present her highly acclaimed Sitarsys featuring notable Chicago based musicians Alex Wing (oud, guitar) Angel Bat Dawid (clarinets), Harrison Bankhead (bass), JoVia Armstrong (percussion) and Zahra Baker (vocals).
