Chicago Jazz String Summit 2018
Chicago Jazz String Summit (CJSS) is a three-day music festival showcasing jazz, classical & experimental music by internationally celebrated musicians. Founded by critically acclaimed cellist and composer, Tomeka Reid, this year’s multi-venue event is open to public and will take place at Constellation May 4-5, 2018, and the Hungry Brain May 6. The Chicago Jazz String Summit aims to bring recognition to contemporary string music and to foster a creative platform for talented improvising string musicians to convene and to experiment.
Marlene Rice Trio
Marlene Rice Trio
A regular performer with renowned Jazz string quartet Quartette Indigo and co-founder of the Jazz string trio Sojourner, violinist, composer and arranger Marlene Rice will close out the first night of CJSS 2018. As a featured soloist and ensemble player, she has recorded, performed and shared the stage with a myriad of world-class artists including saxophonist James Carter, Cassandra, Greg Osby Quartet with Strings, McCoy Tyner, Gilberto Santa Rosa, James Blood Ulmer, Freddie Hubbard, Dionne Warwick and Burt Bacharach to name a few. She will be joined by cellist Nioka Workman and pianist/vocalist Mala Waldron.
Jonathan Chen
Jonathan Chen
Violinist Jonathan Chen is a composer, improviser, and sound artist who creates work through either conceptual foci or through experimentation with materials. His work for electronics often consist of thick layers of fluctuating sounds produced through multiple feedback systems, and at other times a simpler approach. As both an electronicist and violinist/violist his improvisational work emphasizes timbre rather than pitch, either drawing from a wide palette or honing in on a single sound. Chen’s work has been performed or installed at The Museum of Contemporary Art (Chicago), The Soap Factory (Minneapolis), Sonic Circuits International Festival of Electronic Music and Art (Boston & NYC), 2 Kolegas & D22 (Beijing), Goldsmiths College (London), Chicago Cultural Center, Labor Sonar (Berlin), Eyedrum (Atlanta), The Flea (NYC), and many others.
Ben Davis Trio
Ben Davis Trio
Recognized as an innovative improviser and composer, cellist Ben Davis has played in several ensembles led by such luminaries such Wadada Leo Smith and Bobby McFerrin and led the critically acclaimed Basquiat Strings to a Mercury Award Nomination. From the UK and now based in Chicago, Davis will lead a trio featuring Swiss guitarist Samuel Mosching (Zeshan B and the Transistors, Maggie Brown) and legendary drummer Steve Hunt (NRG Ensemble, Mars Williams). “Free spirited, passionate, explorative and exhilarating” are words that could describe this newly formed trio.
