This is the US launch event for Emmanuelle Waeckerlé’s CD Ode (owed) to O, recently released by influential German label Wandelweiser. The work was premiéred at Klangraum 17 in Dusseldorf in July 2017 and at café Oto in London in February 2018.

Ode (owed) to O represents a series of acoustic rendering of Pauline Reage's infamous novel Story of O (1954), using minimal narration and musical translation of re-composed texts that blend erotic literature, experimental writing and verbal scores. The CD concludes a sequence of on-the-page works that seeks to liberate O from her rather shocking story of self-abasement, and the little known fascinating history of its writing.
This is Chicago-based performance collective a•pe•ri•od•ic first encounter with Emmanuelle and her work. Three pieces will be performed (story of), O(hh) and O(nly), based on scores for voices and instruments that take the work away from its original literary context into the field of performative reading and experimental music.

A book version, Reading (Story of) O (Uniformbooks, 2015), a graphic reworking of the English and French versions of the original story and accompanying reading instructions, will be available at the event alongside copies of the CD.

Emmanuelle Waeckerlé & a•pe•ri•od•ic

Emmanuelle Waeckerlé is a London based interdisciplinary artist, writer and performer working with the materiality and musicality of language. Her compositions, installations, performances and participatory occasions seek alternative ways of engaging with our interior or exterior landscape and each other. She is one third of Bouche Bée improvising trio on the edges of Language, with Petri Huurinainen (guitar) and John Eyles (saxophone). Emmanuelle is a Reader at University for the Creative Art (Farnham, UK)

a.pe.ri.od.ic is a Chicago-based performance collective featuring post-Cagean notated, acoustic, experimental music. Founded in 2010*, a.pe.ri.od.ic's repertoire explores the indeterminacy of various musical elements including instrumentation, structure, pitch, and/or duration. Drawn to works of sparseness, contemplation, and quietude, this "daring group" (Chicago Reader) focuses on scores primarily notated with prose. Led by Nomi Epstein, the ensemble has commissioned, premiered, and recorded works by composers such as Michael Pisaro, Eva-Maria Houben, Jurg Frey, James Saunders, and Pauline Oliveros. a.pe.ri.od.ic released its debut album, more or less, featuring the music of Jurg Frey in 2014 under New Focus Recordings.

"Whether one is looking for a powerful feminist expression, a series of innovative text experiments, or a slab of avant-garde bliss, Ode (owed) to O delivers it in an exciting way.
.. Album closer O(hh) is the shortest track at 10 minutes. O(hh) follows the path of the release of O, from full sentences, to sparse words, to repetitions of the letter, to empty breathes, to silence: a wonderful idea for an album closer, and this is demonstrated beautifully in the score."
