Four instrumentalists from disparate musical backgrounds will perform solos sets and an ensemble set.

JIM BECKER is a Chicago treasure and a musician’s musician. Best known as a member of Califone and Iron & Wine and as a teacher and practitioner of Old Timey fiddle music, Becker here presents an extended improvisation based on arcane music of many traditions, utilizing loops and little instruments in a manner that evokes both the experimentation of the AACM and music as spiritual practice.

LIA KOHL is a cellist and multidisciplinary artist. Her work centers on improvisation, performance and sound art. She is a curator and ensemble member with the acclaimed performance ensemble Mocrep. An avid interpreter of contemporary music, she performs with Chicago Composers Orchestra, Fonema Consort, Manual Cinema and Ensemble Dal Niente.

JUNIUS PAUL is an acclaimed upright bass player known for his deep groove and profound improvisatory vision. Coming up within the Southside’s Velvet Lounge community, he now tours internationally with Roscoe Mitchell, the Art Ensemble of Chicago, Dee Alexander, and Makaya McCraven.

NATHANIEL BRADDOCK is the leader of the Occidental Brothers Dance Band Int'l and Trio Mokili, and was a ten-year faculty member of the Old Town School of Folk Music. Braddock has performed extensively with African artists from Mali, Ghana, Zambia, and Congo, and with many American and Australian indie rock bands. His instrumental solo guitar and mandolin sets feature the crossroads of African roots music and American primitive guitar, with original compositions that extend into modern harmonies and rhythms with the complexity of chamber music.

“An exquisite display of fingerstyle playing that connects what John Fahey called American Primitive guitar with the traditional palm-wine style of Sierra Leone, with many detours in between.” - Peter Margasak
