3-On-3
3-On-3
3-On-3 is a monthly meeting space for audience members and practitioners interested in actively engaging with the inner-workings of improvised performance in the broadest sense.

Each month 3 different artists are invited to present a mini set of a mixed line up of improvisers. Lineups can be as small as a trio or as large as a sextet, with a focus on dance, live electronics and/or acoustic music.

3-On-3’s programming model promotes a zero approach: No solo, duo or regular groups. No pre-set rehearsals. No comfort zone.
Katherine Young
Katherine Young
Composer, bassoonist and improviser Katherine Young creates acoustic and electro-acoustic music that has been described by the New York Times as “raw, wailing, coloristic,” and New Music Box has noted “her visceral approach to sound…her attentiveness to the smallest details of timbre; her adventurousness in using instruments in unexpected ways.” Ensemble Dal Niente, Talea Ensemble, Flux Quartet, String Orchestra of Brooklyn, Spektral Quartet, Fonema Consort, and others have performed her compositions. As an improviser, Katherine amplifies her bassoon and employs a flexible electronics set-up. She has documented her work on numerous recordings, and she performs regularly as a soloist, with her duo Architeuthis Walks on Land with violist Amy Cimini, and with projects such as Pretty Monsters and Till by Turning.
Molly Shanahan
Molly Shanahan
Molly Shanahan is the founder and artistic director of Molly Shanahan/Mad Shak, the Chicago-based dance company she founded a long time ago to support her movement and performance explorations in solo, group, collaborative, and other formats. Spontaneous composition is a cherished value and woven through all of her practices, work, teaching and performing. She is the recipient of two NPN Creation Fund Awards, a Chicago Dancemakers Forum Lab Artist Award, an Illinois Arts Council fellowship for choreography, and a 2010 Meier Achievement Award, among other individual and several organizational grants. She is currently getting a Ph.D. in Dance at Temple University in Philadelphia, where her research focuses on her dancemaking practices, especially the release of abdominal musculature to expand Western approaches to dance, fitness, gender, strength, and control. Daily (nah, almost daily) Molly does movement research in water, draws, meditates, and sends long voice memos to friends.

"[Q]uirkiness and grace...like a super slow-motion eruption that toppled their states of hypnosis. Something about it reminded me of a Coen brothers movie...It was all executed perfectly, keeping you smiling and content, but anxious...[A]pproachable and sweet and weird." Urban Milwaukee Dial, October 2014
