Daniel Thatcher: bass
Lucas Gillan: drums

Lucas Gillan's Many Blessings is a young jazz group that finds a home in the meeting point between tightly-knit composition and wide-open improvisation. A Tucson, AZ native who grew up playing as much punk and hardcore as jazz, Gillan is known both as the program director of Internet radio station AccuJazz.com and as an active drummer in Chicago. Completing the group's lineup for this date is Quentin Coaxum on trumpet, Jim Schram on tenor sax, and Daniel Thatcher on bass. Gillan's compositions betray the influence of his heroes, Thelonious Monk and Charles Mingus, but have a modern style of their own, incorporating odd time signatures, extended forms, free improvisation and a melodic sensibility informed by Gillan's occasional work as a singer-songwriter.
SOUND OF THE CITY WORKSHOP
SOUND OF THE CITY WORKSHOP
The SOUND OF THE CITY WORKSHOP gives the traditional jam session a modern twist. In place of the traditional house band, each week a new small ensemble will be featured performing original music. The evening focuses on creative improvisation as a way to approach and achieve original composition.

Following the featured ensemble’s set, the workshop opens things up to a larger pool of musicians, inviting improvisational performance from creative practitioners working within the spectrum of jazz and improvised music.

All improvisers - instrumentalists and vocalists - are welcome. The workshop is open to experienced musicians, as well as those excited to explore improvisation for the first time.

Musicians who’d like to be included need to arrive by 9:30pm. The workshop stresses that musicians come to listen first before taking part in playing. The whole evening is FREE and open to the public.
